New Mexico State University’s 2023 Research and Creativity Week will take place during a new season compared to past events, and feature new events that are open to the public.

This year’s Research and Creativity Week will take place Feb. 21-25, culminating in the Three-Minute Thesis competition organized by the NMSU Graduate School and the College of Arts and Sciences. This year marks the first time the spring competition will be organized in conjunction with Research and Creativity Week, which in the past has taken place in the fall.

Efren Delgado, chair of the University Research Council and professor of food science and technology, said the theme this year is “Research and Creativity Across Borders,” which highlights collaborative efforts among universities and colleges in the region in the fields of both science and the humanities.

“We shouldn’t see science and art separate from each other,” Delgado said. “Across borders means thinking beyond the thought of sticking with once science. For example, math can work with social science and the arts to solve a specific problem. That’s our vision.”

Research and Creativity Week kicks off Feb. 20 with a poetry night from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Grounded, 300 N. Main in Las Cruces. Throughout the week, there will be symposiums, musical performances, a lightning talk, a post doc segment and plenaries, including an international workshop with representatives from universities in the region and Chihuahua and Coahuila, Mexico.

This year’s keynote speakers will be Jessica Hernandez, an Indigenous scholar and community advocate who will discuss the preservation of Indigenous communities; and Grant Douglas, a research scientist who developed the EUREECA technology for capture and containment of radionuclides from contaminated waters.

There will be musical performances taking place daily at the Atkinson Recital Hall. Nosotros, a Southwest-based Latin band, is scheduled to perform Tuesday evening, and the NMSU Jazz Bands featuring Chad James, Jesse Parker and Mike Trujillo will perform Thursday evening. Laura Spitzer, Jim Shearer and Celeste Shearer are schedule to perform Wednesday afternoon. And Randy Granger, a Las Cruces-based Native American flute player and storyteller, is scheduled to perform Friday evening.

There will also be a data science symposium Feb. 24, along with presentations from centers and institutes housed at NMSU Feb. 21.
